What the name of a short story written by famous Chicago writer?

I took an english class at Wright College about Chicago writers maybe five years ago and there was a short story about kids playing baseball in a field. they come across an object, (pile of dirt with glove maybe?) that is supposed to represent someone who used to play baseball. The larger meaning of that object was this person who knows nothing other than baseball continues to linger in the realm of baseball even though he is slowly being forgotten. May have something to do with ernie banks, but I am not sure. Any guidance would be appreciated and I do not remeber the name of of the writer. Could I make this any more difficult?!?!

Could it possibly have been "Death of a Right Fielder," by Stuart Dybek? It was a short story I also read for an English class, and Dybek was from Chicago . . . Good luck!
