Baseball pine tar on helmets?
Why do batters put pine tar on their helmet?
It is actually done intentionally. The player I remember first doing it was Craig Biggio. A player will usually use one helmet throughout the course of a season. They place the tar there so they can touch it during an at-bat if they are not getting the desired grip from their hands or batting gloves. The tar will harden over a period of time and not be sticky anymore so they put another thin coat on when the hardening happens. When they continuously do this throughout the year it will eventually become very heavily caked on and unsightly.
