where to break in your glove?
i have a infielders glove that is 11 inches and a outfielders glove that is 12 inches
ive watched youtube videos on how to break it in but none of them really tell you where to break them in
so my question is do i break in my glove on the heel part or in the palm part
and also im not sure if i am catching correctly
are you suppossed to bring your thumb and middle finger together to catch, your thumb and pinky together, or just use your four fingers to "close" the glove?
Well it depends on which glove you're breaking in; it's different for outfielders and infielders.
In the infield, you want to scoop up the ball and get it out of your glove to throw to first quickly, without ever really closing your glove. So when you break in your infield glove, you DON'T want to give it a deep pocket where the ball could get stuck. That means you break it in by closing it with your thumb to your middle finger, as you described (or breaking it in so that the thumb is going up and the other fingers are coming down, I don't know how to describe it well in words but it's basically the opposite of thumb to pinky, you want thumb to middle finger and in that direction).
In the outfield, your sole concern is catching the ball, so you want a real nice and deep pocket. That means you DO close your thumb to your pinky, or at least in the direction of the pinky (it could be the ring finger if thats more comfortable), so that when it's closed there's a deeper pocket.
One thing I would strongly reccommend is to actually put your pinky and your ring finger both in the hole in the glove for the pinky, so that you move each finger down one space from where it's 'supposed' to be (except for the thumb of course). That way, you have more control over your glove, because of those two fingers in the pinky hole giving you more strength on that whole side of your glove. If you don't like it go back to normal, but its a common practice and I like it a hundred times better than the normal grip. It makes breaking the gloves in like I described much easier, simply because you have more control.
And to actually break the glove in, what you're doing is making it easier to close by repeatedly playing catch with it so that it forms to the shape you desire. So there's no specific part of the glove you break in, the main part of breaking in your glove should really be just using it (It doesn't have to be the only part, but the main part definitely). It's all about forming that pocket the way you want it.
Anyway, I'm not sure how competitive you're going to be playing, I mean if this is like a rec league or something with a really cheap glove that might not even be able to stay the way you break it in, all of this doesn't matter much. But if you are playing pretty competitively then this can be useful no doubt.
