How can I read Japanese on Japanese Yahoo Chat applet (on my English MS OS (XP Pro). The kanji is unreadable.?

I want to use the Yahoo Chat applet and/or Yahoo Messenger to communicate with friends in Japan. If I download the Messenger software from the Yahoo Japan website, all of the menus and anything I type in Japanese kanji comes out as unreadable ("moji-bake"). Anything sent by friends in Japanese kanji is also unreadable. I have the English version of Microsoft XP Pro OS, with the ability to type Japanese characters.

There's like a plug in or a download for it. Sometimes it comes w/ the Windows XP installation.
