How to Pack for Different Weathers
If you're amongst those who put off packing until the very last moment, then it's probably not something you care too much for. But you're not alone. Several people find packing the most tedious part of a vacation and avoid getting to it until they absolutely have to.
While there is nothing we can do to make the process more exciting, we can attempt to make it more organized by providing tips on how to pack your luggage for different weather conditions.
Packing for Cold Weather
If you're traveling to a cold destination, there is no getting around the fact that your luggage will weigh substantially because warm clothing tends to be heavy.
So, how can you pack efficiently for cold weather? The simple rule that any frequent traveler will vouch for is to wear your heaviest coat or jacket on board. Not only that, you'll also be well advised to wear the bulkiest pair of shoes while you're traveling to reduce the weight of your suitcase.
Any wintry trip would require you to dress in layers. Take along thermal, long-sleeved shirts made from thin and warm fabrics, and light sweaters and top this up with a jacket to provide you "layered warmth." Every time you feel warm, you can take off a layer or vice versa when you feel cold.
Take enough insulation for your hands, feet and head as the body tends to lose most of its heat from these areas. Mittens, gloves, thick woolen socks, hats, and scarves will help keep you warm and cozy.
Cold weather can cause your skin to become dry and shrivel up and your lips might also start chapping. That's why it's important to pack a good quality lotion and lip balm to keep them moisturized all the time.
Also, the sun can get extremely strong at high altitudes. Always carry a strong sunscreen and a pair of sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes from the intense sunlight.
Packing for Hot & Humid Weather
Compared to cold weather, packing for warm weather is a cakewalk. The rule of thumb is to carry loose, flowing clothes that allow your skin to breathe. Fabrics like cotton and linen work best in keeping your body cool in sweltering heat.
Tees, tanks, short-sleeved shirts, khakis, shorts, light skirts and dresses, swimming trunks and suits are all you'll need on a summery vacation. For evenings, you may want to carry some dressier shirts, blouses, slacks or a pair of denims along with a light jacket or stole as it can get cooler at this time of the day.
It's unlikely that you'll be able to wear heavy shoes with socks during the day unless you're planning to go hiking or trekking. Flip-flops or sandals that are comfortable to walk in and a dressy pair of footwear for the evenings should do the trick.
Lastly, don't forget to pack toiletries and accessories such as sunscreen, lip balm, body mist or deodorant, anti-fungal cream, sunglasses, and a hat or scarf to protect you from the heat. A lot of bags these days come with built-in waterproof pocket for toiletries. If yours doesn't have one, it's a good idea to buy a toiletry kit as you're going to need it for all your trips.
Always be prepared…
…For rains and other climatic conditions like windstorms, thunderstorms, and blizzards. It's a good idea to carry a hooded waterproof windbreaker, an umbrella, and some storage space for wet clothes in your luggage whether you're headed for a cold vacation or warm!
