What is a technique to help me hand relief cutting chisel across the grain of softwood?
relief carving cut into small pine blocks. Chiseling about 2 square inch which is about 3 / 16''de depth in soft pine blocks. The purpose is to provide adjourning for square mounting legs overcame these small blocks which are then used to provide a strong bond to the seat of the small stool. He completed a stool, but the engraving was very slow and tedious, especially having to chisel across the grain in pine. I just ruined a block and had to cut others. However, I feel better technique maybe I could help. Can anyone give me some good advice for hand chipping softwood lumber, mostly having to cut cross grain.
I would be doing with a router and a template. Then you just need to chisel the corners to be square. If you are going to chisel into the grain, they need a very, very sharp chisel. How many times have worsened yours? If you are using a hardware store without sharpening, you're probably not a very good advantage and chisel.
