Softball and the Olympics

George Hancock invented softball in 1887 from Chicago. More than a hundred years later, the game made a debut appearance in the Atlanta Olympic Games. The US team won the gold medal of that inaugural 1996 championship over China with a 3-1 in the finals.

The Olympic version was women's fast pitch softball that differed in speed from recreational softball in US leagues. This made the game faster and thus more proactive. Softball enthusiasts increased all over the world and many countries took to the game for the first time. It also inspired devoted players and fans globally, with some pursuing the sport with a fanatic passion.

Softball has since been an Olympic event after 1996, featuring prominently in 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games. However, just before the Beijing 2008 Olympics, the International Olympic Committee abolished softball the Olympics. It shall therefore be omitted during the 2012 London Olympic Games. The committee’s 52-52 tied vote, with one abstaining member, banished thousands of young girls worldwide who had nurtured dreams of taking their nations to Olympic glory. Had only one vote been gained, the sport would have been saved.

The reason for the abolishment was cited as lack of worldwide support. Women fast pitch softball has also been wrongly referred to as a female version of the popular baseball.

The International Softball Association, the U.S. Olympic Committee and other international Softball bodies are now rigorously lobbying for IOC to reinstate the game arguing that it enjoys great international support. Backed by 150 National Softball Federations, the International Softball Federation launched the ‘Back Softball Olympic campaign’, to securing a place for softball in the 2016 Olympics.
