What is the origins of the baseball high socks and stirrups, and why are they worn?

Players like Alex Rodriguez and Jason Veritek wear their socks high. Is there a purpose or is it simply style today? Was there a purpose to wearing high socks and stirrups in the past when it started

I can't say there was a "purpose", but almost all of the players wore the high socks in the old days. But now, it's just whatever the players want to do and feel more comfortable with.

I am 14 years old, I play baseball for my township. Last year I wore the high socks for the first time, but now I'm back to the pants all the way down to the ankles.
